Remote Work Adventures in Manali

Why?#

As a backend software engineer at Headout, I feel fortunate to be part of a company that embraces remote work. When I needed a change of scenery, I seized the opportunity to work from the mountains for a month (Nov 13 - Dec 13, 2022), and finally checked Manali off my bucket list. It was the perfect blend of work and adventure.

Remote Work Adventures in Manali#

My workdays in Manali typically started around 9 am, as I soaked up the sun while attending to emails and crucial team messages. Occasionally, my friends and I would prepare some “pahadi” maggie noodles for an energy boost before diving into the day.

Yum!

Thanks to Headout’s flexible work policy, I could adapt my schedule to my preferences, allowing me to enjoy Manali’s picturesque surroundings during my downtime and weekends.

Meeting TIME!

One major challenge of remote work in Manali was handling distractions. With countless outdoor activities and attractions, it’s easy to neglect work duties. To counter this, I designated a distraction-free workspace in my lodging and alternated with work-friendly cafes every other day.

Despite these hurdles, remote work in Manali offered several advantages. The natural surroundings and stunning vistas were a refreshing change from a typical office setting, keeping me energized and focused.

Overall, remote work in Manali had its unique challenges and rewards. With the right mindset and strategies, it was a transformative experience that enabled me to strike a balance between work and leisure.

Exploration!#

Manali boasts breathtaking natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage. During my free time and weekends, I made sure to explore the region and experience all it had to offer. From scenic drives to cultural landmarks, there was always something new and exciting to uncover.

A must-see attraction in Manali is the Atal Tunnel, an engineering wonder connecting Manali to Lahaul-Spiti Valley. The world’s longest high-altitude road tunnel presents awe-inspiring views of the mountainous landscape. This unforgettable drive allowed me to venture into a remote and relatively unexplored region of the Himalayas.

Another memorable experience was exploring Sethan, a quaint mountain village. This lesser-known hamlet boasts a vibrant community of farmers and artisans and provides a glimpse into traditional Himalayan life. I spent an afternoon wandering the village, interacting with locals and learning about their customs and daily routines.

Manali is also home to various cultural landmarks. The ancient village of Naggar houses historic temples and museums, such as the Roerich Art Gallery, which exhibits the works of famed Russian artist Nicholas Roerich. Naggar Castle, a 15th-century fortress turned heritage hotel, was another favorite spot, particularly for its upscale cafes.

No visit to Manali would be complete without a trip to Lahaul-Spiti Valley. This remote area features some of the world’s most striking natural landscapes, including the mesmerizing Sissu mountain pass. Driving through the valley was surreal, allowing me to appreciate the unadulterated beauty of the Himalayas.

My time exploring Manali was truly unforgettable. From the natural splendor to the cultural attractions, there was always something new and thrilling to experience.
